Magnesium is an essential mineral required by the body. Magnesium is a catalyst in enzyme activity and assists with calcium and potassium uptake. Magnesium is required for the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses. It is needed for bone, protein, and fatty acid formation, making new cells, activating B vitamins, relaxing muscles, clotting blood, and forming adenosine triphosphate (ATP; the energy the body runs on). The secretion and action of insulin also require magnesium.

A deficiency of magnesium may cause symptoms such as muscle weakness and cramps, fatigue, bone loss, insomnia, depression, poor digestion and irritability.

Amino-Mag is an amino acid chelate of magnesium glycinate and magnesium lysinate, which provides highly absorbable magnesium. Minerals in general, are not easily absorbed into the blood stream causing many of the minerals you take to be excreted. In the process of chelation, magnesium is bonded to amino acids, a food-type substance. In essence, the minerals become surrounded by amino acids, which fools the body into accepting the mineral as an amino acid. Amino acids are easily absorbed by your body, so the minerals are taken with them. Chelated minerals are the most bio-available form of minerals. Magnesium Chelate is unusually well-tolerated without GI side effects, compared to inorganic salt forms of this mineral.

Most people don’t consume enough magnesium in their diets. Also, deficiency may occur in people with chronic diarrhea, pancreatitis, and other conditions associated with malabsorption. Magnesium deficiency is common in people taking “potassium-depleting” prescription diuretics. Taking too many laxatives can also lead to deficiency. Alcoholism, severe burns, diabetes, and heart failure are other potential causes of deficiency. People with a history of alcoholism were six times more likely to have magnesium deficiency than were people without such a history. The low magnesium status seen in alcoholics with liver cirrhosis contributes to the development of hypertension in these people. Almost two-thirds of people in intensive care hospital units have been found to be magnesium deficient. Magnesium levels have been found to be low in people with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Many nutritionally oriented doctors recommend 250–350 mg per day of supplemental magnesium for adults.
