Probiotics (friendly flora or healthy organisms) are living microorganisms that may have beneficial effects on a person’s health. When probiotics such as lactic acid–producing bacteria are taken as a supplement, these microorganisms bring intestinal bacteria back into balance and promote health by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria, boosting immune function, increasing resistance to infection, and promoting proper digestion of foods, absorption of nutrients, and elimination of wastes from your body.

Our intestinal tract does not contain any bacteria when we are born but instead first get colonized through childbirth and breast-feeding. Unfortunately, the extreme overuse of antibiotics by medical doctors have led to a depletion of bacteria, both good and bad. This leaves our bodies open for infection, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

People with flourishing intestinal colonies of beneficial bacteria are better equipped to fight the growth of disease-causing bacteria. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora by producing organic compounds—such as lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid—that increase the acidity of the intestine and inhibit the reproduction of many harmful bacteria. Probiotic bacteria also produce substances called bacteriocins, which act as natural antibiotics to kill undesirable microorganisms.

Two common examples of probiotics found in the intestines are lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Acidophilus and bifidobacteria may manufacture B vitamins, including niacin, folic acid, biotin, and vitamin B6. Lactobacilli can prevent diarrhea in children. In the intestine, probiotic bacteria are believed to protect the mucous lining by keeping harmful bacteria from sticking to the intestinal wall.

Diarrhea caused by antibiotic use is thought to occur because the probiotic bacteria are killed, allowing the harmful bacteria to colonize the intestine. Supplementing probiotics is thought to stop this process by reducing the harmful bacteria’s access to the mucous membrane of the intestine.

Our stomachs and intestines are populated by hundreds of billions of these bacteria. Amazingly, there are more probiotic organisms in our gut than there are cells in our bodies! That’s a lot of bacteria, but it’s GOOD bacteria, and each strain has specific functions in the human body. While a good balance of these different microflora is necessary, there are many factors that can, and do, disrupt this balance – certain medications, like antacids and pain medications, a poor diet, infection, stress, bad bacteria, and aging. The good news is that a rapidly expanding body of research suggests that supplementing the diet with probiotics can have a beneficial affect on gastrointestinal function, and therefore overall health.
